How to stop forgetting what you study: active recall and spaced repetition
Re-reading and highlighting feel productive and barely work. Two methods actually do — and they are the whole reason the notes here come with flashcards and quizzes.

You study a chapter, understand it, feel good — and two weeks later, in the exam, it is gone. This is the single most frustrating thing about studying, and it is not a memory defect. It is that the most common study methods — re-reading notes and highlighting — barely work, while feeling like they do. The good news: the two methods that do work are simple, free, and backed by decades of research. Here they are.
Why re-reading fools you
When you re-read a page, it looks familiar, and your brain reads familiarity as "I know this". But recognising something when it is in front of you is not the same as being able to produce it when the page is blank. The exam always asks for the second thing. Re-reading builds recognition; the exam tests recall. That gap is why so much revision feels productive and changes so little.
Method one: active recall
Active recall means testing yourself instead of reviewing — closing the book and forcing your brain to pull the answer out. It is harder and less comfortable than re-reading, and that difficulty is the learning: every time you successfully retrieve something, you strengthen the path to it. Flashcards, practice questions and past papers are all active recall. A quiz you take with the notes closed teaches you far more than an hour of reading them.

Method two: spaced repetition
The second method is about when you review. Left alone, memory fades along a predictable "forgetting curve" — steep at first, then slower. Spaced repetition beats the curve by reviewing a thing just as you are about to forget it: after a day, then a few days, then a week, then a fortnight. Each well-timed review flattens the curve further, until the fact barely fades at all. The same total study time, spread out, produces dramatically more lasting memory than cramming it into one sitting.
Putting them together
- Study a topic, then the same day, close everything and test yourself on it — flashcards or practice questions.
- Review it again after 2–3 days, again testing rather than re-reading.
- Review after about a week, then after two. Space the gaps out as it sticks.
- Anything you get wrong goes back into the pile sooner; anything you nail moves further out.

It is more effort in the moment than highlighting, and many times more effective. Studying is not about the hours you put in; it is about whether your brain has to work during them.
